22ND COMPASS AWARDS PRESENTATION 2017

We were honoured to have Mr Tan Chuan-Jin grace our 22nd COMPASS Awards Presentation 2017 as Guest-of-Honour. It was a spectacular night concluding with Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Dick Lee with a medley of his songs, delighting audiences with his strong Singaporean local flavor. Taufik heated up the ballroom with his song ‘Awak Kat Mane’ which bagged the Top Local Malay Pop Song (highest-royalty earning song in the category) while Artistic Recipient Elaine Chan, touched our hearts with her soulful piano performance of The Rest Of My Life.

The audience bopped along to Theodora and Tat Tong's Happy Little Pill followed by Shai and Abigail's rendition of 王妃 Wang Fei, a popular rock song written by Lee Shi Shiong amongst other performance such as Vasantham Boyz's Nilavey, Daphne Khoo's C, Charlie Lim's Light Breaks In and several others.

For those who were not able to attend the 22nd COMPASS Awards Presentation 2017, we will be posting photos on our Facebook and videos on our YouTube soon.

GOING LOCAL POPUP! 2017

Going Local Popup! as its name suggests, has been randomly popping up at sporadic spots around the island, such as Timbre+, Barber Shop and Paragon this year but the aim is still the same – to bring local songs to the forefront and to encourage audienceship.

The sessions featured upcoming singer-songwriters Joie Tan, Nelson Tan, JJ Ong, Ciao Turtle, Disco Hue, Zeeaura and Azmi. Going Local Popup! started popping up in August and all of September and we were grateful that the modest efforts caught the eye of Life! in a half page write-up.

We will continue to encourage local songs and introduce more singer-songwriters in months to come. ∞

YELLOW RIBBON PROJECT SONGWRITING COMPETITION 2017

The Yellow Ribbon Songwriting Competition 2017 finale ended on a high note on 20 July 2017 afternoon. The Yellow Ribbon songwriting Competition, led by COMPASS is a songwriting initiative for participants to put their experiences into song, in hopes of building a bridge back to society upon their release. It is also a rehabilitative process where participants can make self realizations and set new directions.

The project for the past 3 years has been so successful that this year, COMPASS has been asked to include female participants from Changi Women Prison to compete with the male participants. It was such a successful session that both the Top Song and Runner-up Song were by female participants. Judges Danny Loong, Lingkai and Don Richmond were pleasantly surprised by the different feel and dynamic of the songs from the females and were highly encouraging to the participants to continue honing their talents in this field. Mentors Jack, Rai and Inch were also present to witness the growth of their mentees and it was heartening to watch the mentors swell with pride as each of their mentees performed.

COMPASS is thankful to all participants, mentors, judges and most importantly, SCORE (Yellow Ribbon Project) and Singapore Prison Service for believing in this project and allowing it to happen year after year.

Till next year! ∞
