ANNUAL ADDRESS BY DR EDMUND LAM,
CEO & DIRECTOR/COMPASS & CHAIRMAN/ CISAC (ASIA PACIFIC)
AT 11th COMPASS AWARDS PRESENTATION
AT RAFFLES CITY CONVENTION CENTRE ON 21 MAY 2006
English translation of Speech in Malay
Dear Members and Friends. Overall, last year was a good year. There was an increase in royalties for Malay music writers. At the same time a number of young and promising artistes, bands and song writers have emerged in the local music industry. It is a good indication that local Malay music is once again slowly gaining popularity among Singaporeans. However, we are still some way compared with the heydays in the 1960s and 1970s when local compositions were dominant in the local market.
We reaffirm COMPASS?commitment to the promotion of local music among the Malay community. We have done this through supporting the activities organised by PERKAMUS. Some activities carried out last year include a Malay music forum, seminar on Asli songs and a song writing clinic.
The COMPASS Board has decided to further increase its support to PERKAMUS this year. Besides providing more financial resources, it will also extend staff and logistics support. This will help further increase the number of and improve the activities organised. We have appointed an additional membership staff who joined us in April. He is Didicazli.
Quietly but steadily, young artistes and music writers are emerging and gaining acceptance in the local market. To name a few, we have besides Taufik, Khairul Anwar, Norazeela, rap group Ahli Fikir, band Ursula Bites, and composer and arranger, Shawalludin. They have tremendous potential to do well. To maintain the momentum, we will try to work out a promotional scheme with MDA and the local radio stations to have more airplay for local Malay music.
In the pipeline will also be a nation-wide song writing competition and performance modelled after our successful Xin Yao festival organised with the local media and FM 93.3 radio station for Chinese music. We hope to get feedback from members before we finalise our plans.
I have said this last year but it is important enough for me to repeat this again. The future of the Malay music industry depends much on the renewal of leadership heading our associations. We need younger people who better understand the needs of the evolving membership. We should have more people like our respected Encik Yusnor Ef who has selflessly served in both PERKAMUS and COMPASS and will continue to do so. However it is timely and fair that a few younger members step forward to share some of his burden.
