July 2018’s Feature – LEW

July 1, 2018

LEW, is a twenty one year old local singer-songwriter who translates something intangible, emotion, into an embrace that is rough but real. His voice is a melodic silky sound that hugs you like a friend, and takes you home. LEW’s debut album “Lullacry” reached #1 on the Singapore iTunes Charts, #6 in China and #9 in Taiwan respectively, and has now amassed over 2.9 million plays on Spotify. More recently, LEW will be releasing two EPs, ‘ENFJ’ and ‘There’s Something In My Eye’, this year.

COMPASS: Where do you draw your inspirations from?

LEW: Inspiration is drawn from personal experience, and I believe that inspiration can be drawn from anything and everything around you. The only inhibitor is oneself and I try to be creative when I write my music.

C: Do you think your musical style has evolved over the years of writing songs and how has it changed?

L: I think in general, my musical style has not changed, but more accurately evolved. I feel more enabled with a larger bank of experiences, and I allow myself to try new techniques with songwriting. Recently I released a trio of electronic driven songs, and this was the result of testing new waters and challenging myself with new genres of songwriting.

C: What are the challenges that you have faced so far and how did you overcome them?

L: The greatest challenge was definitely staying motivated and finding an identity as a musician in the industry. It’s easy to dream, but hard to make one a reality. I believe that the constant reminders from friends, family and listeners to not give up, and that my music has intention and that is important, definitely helped.

C: Any song(s) in both EPs that particularly stood out to you and why did they stand out?

L: I wrote the song ‘Flaws’ as a reaching out to anyone who struggles with insecurity. ‘ENFJ’ is a collection of songs I’ve written, about some of the facets of the human condition that one may experience. Anxiety, insecurity, conformity, jealousy and fear are some of these themes. I’m hoping that the songs on this EP can shed light on these things.

C: Finally, why the theme of pyjamas for your double EP launch?

L: I just wanted to do something special for all the working adults in addition to any Singaporean trapped in a routine life. Attempt to dissolve their Monday blues, and try to add a little more spontaneity in their lives…

C: Anything else you would like to tell us or perhaps any message you would like to relay?

L: I can’t wait for more opportunities to co-write, so if you are reading this, and see a potentially special song together, let me know!
