August 2018’s Feature – Cadence

Cadence is a Singaporean alternative rock band formed in 2014. With varied musical influences, its five members found common ground marrying energetic riffs and hard-hitting beats with yearning vocals. The band’s songs chronicle life’s trials and triumphs introspectively, with onstage performances often resembling a kind of collective catharsis. Energetic, sometimes intense, but always hopeful.

Cadence released their second EP ‘Pendulum’ on 10 August 2018. The six track follow-up to their debut EP ’Heights’ sees the band evolve from the ‘post-emo’ alternative rock sound they have come to be known for.

With an increasing appetite for new sounds, the band incorporates vocal effects, arpeggiated synths and sampled drums, resulting in a collection of songs that are still inherently rock, but with a more experimental sound than their prior work.

Most notable indications of this on the EP can be heard on ‘Fm (interlinked)’, where the arrangement serves more like a soundtrack to a cinematic plot, and ‘FLMP’ a funky number which could be Cadence’s most pop song yet. ‘Pendulum’ EP also sees each band member creating more space for each other, especially evident on “All You Need Remains”, where the band builds instrument by instrument till reaching its anthemic chorus.

Also evident on the EP is the stark contrast between it’s lighter arrangements and its darker ones. Frontman, Seth Chiam explains, “Thematically, the song ‘Pendulum’, sums it up best. It’s about a swing between being hopeful and hopeless. The first track ‘Fugitives’ is reckless abandon, by the time the listener hears ‘Rumination’ in the middle, it’s rock bottom, and the last two tracks are about recovering and reseting.”

Following the launch, the band will have an official launch for ‘Pendulum’ EP at Baybeats Festival, 17 August 2018, along with Singapore Night Festival 2018 on the 23 August. The band is looking towards working with artists to deconstruct some of the songs to create alternative versions.
