Formerly known as Daphne Khoo, Haneri first found music success in Singapore where the Australian Chinese singer came in 3rd runner up on the pioneer season of Singapore Idol.
She has since performed on a wide range of stages from intimate showcases partnering with Starbucks Singapore to the biggest arena in Singapore for the opening of the SEA Games in 2015.
Daphne Khoo’s debut full length album (Desperate) that scored her Best New Breakout Artist in 2008, an EP (Wonderland) and a slew of singles under her belt that have all charted on iTunes Singapore.
Since moving and rebranding to Haneri, she’s written and featured on a track with EDM legend Dash Berlin “We Don’t Belong”, collaborated with power producer turned artist Kuizz (Malaysia) on his single “Silences”. Both songs have garnered much attention all over the world.
Her first single “Burning Up” had spots on NMF in 10 countries and were on viral charts in 4. Her following single “Feel Alright” claimed spots on viral charts in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Austria and was featured on the cover of New Music Friday Singapore the week it was released and had over 5 million streams within it’s first 4 months of release.
As a songwriter, Haneri recently won Young Songwriter of the Year with COMPASS (Singapore 2017).
Haneri is currently based in Los Angeles.
COMPASS: You recently released as new single – Real Love. Tell us more about this song. What inspired this song and what is the significance of this song, if any.
Haneri: This song celebrates pure innocent love. It was inspired by my puppy Snowball who has been in my life since Christmas 2017. I feel like we don’t talk about love in that way anymore and I personally hardly put out flat out love songs but I am so happy that I finally got to this time!
C: When you take on the name Haneri, does your musical style and direction change and how so, as compared to being Daphne Khoo?
H: I feel like there’s a distinct difference with the quality of music and intention behind Haneri and a very obvious development within my journey as Daphne Khoo that I hope people can hear.
C: Now that you are based in LA, how different is it to be writing and producing in LA as compared to Singapore?
H: The process is different with different people and as I get to work with new people all the time and making music with new people it’s always different but I love that it’s always something new.
C: Do you see any potential collaborations with local songwriters or do you have anyone in mind that you would love to collaborate with and why?
H: I would love to write with LEW and Joie Tan. They’re both local acts that I’ve loved so much. I also still have a much loved song that I wrote with Nathan Hartono a few years ago that I hope gets to meet the world at some point.
C: Any new and exciting news, song writing wise, in the near future? Tell us more.
H: There are more singles on the way! But for now I’m working hard on my debut North America tour that’s going to be a fully acoustic solo tour and I’m super excited about it. I’m very sure there will be many more songs inspired by the tour and I can’t wait for you to hear them!
