COMPASS: Tell us more about your latest single – Hingga Hujung Waktu.
Izat: “Hingga Hujung Waktu” came to me back in 2017. Nu’Kingdvm came to me and played me the track and I instantly fell in love with it. I had so much fun recording it, I did the background vocals myself too so its ALL ME in that track. “Hingga Hujung Waktu” is a cute and fun love song, if you’re looking for a song to be played during your 1st Anniversary video montage, CHOOSE THIS!
C: You were mainly performing when you first started out. What prompted you to start writing your own songs and where do you get your inspirations from?
I: In 2014, I used to sing 6 nights a week, using the stage as my learning platform and I’d get compliments and encouragements from my regulars telling me to write songs and release original music. I dabbled with the idea but my mind wasn’t focused on that area just yet.
2016, the interest to put out original music sparked so I gave it a shot. I co-wrote with people for a start because it was my first time and I definitely had ALOT to learn.
When I write, inspiration comes from life experiences, I write a story from what I know. Sometimes it comes naturally and sometimes it doesn’t. I take examples from an actual artiste that I love too.
C: What were the challenges you faced when you first started writing songs and how did you overcome them?
I: Definitely writing songs ALONE is the challenge especially when it’s not your forte. I am so used to just singing and performing that song-writing doesn’t even come to my mind. Getting the words right is also another challenge, the rhymes, trying to get a sentence across without being too wordy or cheesy too.
But like I said, I co-write for a start. I’ve worked with Razil MN for “Tiada Gunanya” and I’ve worked with Lew and Ffion as well so I’ve taken those sessions and put that learning experience to my current and future works.
C: Any thoughts on being a songwriter in our local music scene?
I: I believe I still have a lot to learn about song-writing. But definitely, if there’s an opportunity for it I’ll jump on-board.
