A message from the COMPASS Chairman

October 27, 2021

Dear fellow COMPASS Members,

I am very honoured and humbled to have been elected the new Chairman of COMPASS at the recent 136th Council Meeting. The role brings with it great responsibilities and I promise to discharge my duties earnestly and diligently.

I would like first to thank the Directors of the Board very much for their trust. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor and immediate past Chairman Mel Ferdinands, for his dedication to COMPASS over the past 4 years as Chairman and over the past 27 years as a member of the Council.

COMPASS has grown substantially in terms of membership size and annual revenue since its establishment in 1987. I will do my best to continue the enduring effort made so far, which has made COMPASS a leading Collective Management Organisation in Singapore.

There are many new challenges on the horizon such as recovery in a post-pandemic world especially the accelerated digitalisation of the economy and our society, the Copyright Act 2021, and in succession planning at the Board, Management and staff levels.

I am pleased to be able to say that these challenges have enhanced our commitment to—and continued focus on—creating long-term value for all stakeholders especially our members and affiliated overseas societies.

I believe that my long years of experience as a composer, performer, business owner and membership in past government committees will help me propose and promote actions for strengthening the organisation.

One of my plans was to set up the Writer Members Consultative Committee (WMCC) representing our diverse membership to gather in-depth and candid feedback on how we can be a better organisation. The board has approved the setting up of the WMCC. Also, if any of you have questions for me or for the Board as a whole, I encourage you to contact me at: jeremymonteiro@compass.org.sg

We will progressively update members when we roll out our plans to meet the pending challenges over the next 3 to 5 years. The plans cover all major aspects of our operations such as licensing, documentation and distribution, and communications with members and the general public.

Make no mistake, we have lots of work to do and goals to achieve but with the support of all members, the board and the team at COMPASS, we are excited and eager to start working towards that future!

With thanks and best wishes
Professor Jeremy Monteiro PBM CM FRSA FLCM
